Linking Phase 2 and Phase 3

At the third decision node meeting, the management (board) will decide on the continuation of the PSS project, the opportunities having been explored in depth in phase 2 of the project.
This decision nodes deal with:
    • quality of execution of phase 2;
    • validation of demonstrable business rationale (selected scenarios);
    • concrete action plan for phase 3.

After phase 2 (Exploring Opportunities), a selection is made among the different tentative PSS ideas. The next phase (PSS Idea Development) is devoted to proposing and analysing different possible versions of the PSS idea in terms of interaction modes and system organisation in order to evaluate the most sustainable and profitable version (how it is supplied, organised, etc.). The development of the selected PSS idea includes elaboration of different possible characteristics and versions, thus enabling selection of the most promising.

At the decision node meeting, the management (board) will decide on continuation to phase 3 and give its recommendations for the execution of this phase. These recommendations will be based on linking the output of the bottom-up process (scenario studies that have been finalised) with the company’s mission and long-term strategic views.
PSS project team delegation:
    • PSS project leader, accompanied by one core team member
Management delegation:
    • Responsible Management (Board) member accompanied by selected staff, board members or external adviser/referees (e.g. a university professor)
    • The presence of an independent facilitator could result in an honest and open decision process in which bottom-up and top-down process are both fully respected (and to best serve the revolutionary (and potentially disruptive) character of the PSS innovation project).
Presentation by project team delegation of the results of phase 2

The presented input is the basis for a discussion with, and validation by, the management team delegation concerning progress and choices.  In this decision node, key inputs are:
    • The most promising scenarios worked out by the project team and stakeholders (selected results of the applied processes and tools in Phase 2)
    • Sustainability assessment of these scenarios
    • Expected potential of PSS innovation project in relation to the company’s business case
    • Revised version of stakeholder system map
    • Proposed revisions in PID
    • Proposed revisions in Project Plan
Results of this decision node are:
    • Decision: go/hold/go-back/stop
    • Reviewed system map
    • Approved most promising PSS Scenarios that will proceed to the development phase
    • Approval for entering the next phase, with management’s guiding recommendations
    • Date and deliverables for decision node meeting 4
During the meeting minutes should be taken. If a facilitator is present, a Mindmap should be made to create a transparent and structured discussion.
